On the Porch
I got a little drunk last night
But it was okay.
I was at home.
I sat outside and looked at the stars
And thought of you.
The breeze and mosquitos blew by me
And a tear puddled in my eye.
I wanted to share the moment with you.
The soft air, the fading pink sky,
The bunnies as they hunkered down.
The cars drove by and if I closed my eyes I could believe it was waves crashing on the shore.
Wind chimes tinkled in the air
As the sky grew darker.
A single bird sang its mournful song in the distance.
The neighbor’s lights flickered on
And it was time to go back inside.
I left your spirit out on the porch
But not the haunting thoughts of your presence.
They’re with me always.
