CFRE

I have some extra letters after my name: CFRE and CEFL.

I just got recertified as a CFRE – Certified Fund Raising Executive – which is required every 3 years. I’ve had the CFRE since 2001, so I’ve recertified a number of times.

Every time it comes up, I reflect on whether or not it’s worth the time, effort, and cost to go through the process again.

For those unfamiliar with the credential: “to earn the CFRE, candidates must meet specific education and experience requirements and pass a comprehensive exam that covers topics such as donor relations, ethical fundraising practices, volunteer management, and campaign management.”

The credential isn’t just about proving what you know – it’s about demonstrating that you’re committed to professional development and upholding high standards within the fundraising field.

As a consultant, I feel it lends credibility to my experience and commitment to the profession. It also forces me to stay informed about changes in fundraising and nonprofit operations.

Does it make a difference to those who consider hiring me? I don’t know. I hope it plays a part in how they view me.

More than that, though, it reminds me that I have years of experience and knowledge that I bring to the table. Even if I don’t currently work as a VP at a major nonprofit bringing in millions of dollars.

We’ll see if I still feel the need to go through the process again in 3 years. Until then, I’ll celebrate this win and acknowledgement of my accomplishments.

I’ll save talking about the CEFL designation for another time.
