essays – Consulting
Changes
This month Iโm celebrating anniversaries for both my marriage and my business.
How have things changed for my work since I launched 501(c)onsulting 24 years ago?
๐๐ฒ๐ ๐บ๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐๐ป๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฎ๐๐. . .
Back in 2001, being a nonprofit consultant meant showing up with a three-ring binder, flip charts and markers, and the firm belief that โstrategic planning retreatsโ solved everything.
Fast-forward to today, and umm. . .things look a little different.
(Iโm still a fan of flip charts and markers, though.)

๐ ๐ก๐ผ๐: We focus on ๐ฅ๐ง๐ค๐๐ง๐๐จ๐จ. And we actually measure it. (If you donโt measure and track things, do/did they really happen?)
๐ฌ ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ๐ป: I was viewed as the โexpert in the room.โ
๐ค ๐ก๐ผ๐: Weโre ๐ฅ๐๐ง๐ฉ๐ฃ๐๐ง๐จ ๐๐ฃ ๐ฉ๐๐ ๐ฅ๐ง๐ค๐๐๐จ๐จ โ collaborating, co-designing, and co-learning with each other.
๐ ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ๐ป: Data was โnice to have.โ
๐ก ๐ก๐ผ๐: Data drives [almost] everything โ from funding strategies to impact storytelling. (The #1 question: โWhatโs the ROI?โ The #2 question: โDoes the data change our approach?โ)
๐ ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ๐ป: Most consulting was local.
๐ป ๐ก๐ผ๐: Teams span time zones, and clients might be across the country โ or halfway around the world. (Hello, my friends in Switzerland and Canada!)

But the tools, expectations, and pace? Thatโs evolved faster than my dial-up connection could ever handle. โ
